Ambient

Slow-moving texture instead of songs: pads that evolve, reverb that breathes, and no drums anywhere. Mostly a genre of exclusions. Like everything in the glossary, these are starting points for your own ears rather than guarantees; the landing page covers the slider settings and habits to pair with them.

Ambient is the rare genre where the Exclude Styles field does more work than the prompt. The music is texture and time: soft synth pads that change so slowly you barely notice, long reverb tails, maybe a piano note or a field-recording hiss. Suno's instinct is to add rhythm and structure, so your main job is refusing both. Prompt for stillness, exclude anything with a pulse, and let the model sit in one place.

The signature elements

Pads

The foundation. Slow attack, long release, and movement measured in tens of seconds rather than beats.

Soft evolving synth pads with slow attack and long release, warm and enveloping, drifting gradual changes.

Texture

The layer that makes it feel like a place instead of a preset: tape hiss, air, distant shimmer.

Subtle textural layers, gentle tape hiss and airy shimmer, distant atmospheric depth.

Piano

Optional, and stronger when sparse. A few soft notes with the sustain pedal down, swallowed by reverb.

Sparse soft piano notes with heavy sustain, drenched in long reverb, unhurried and distant.

Low end

Not a bassline. A slow sub swell that rises and fades like a tide gives the track weight without rhythm.

Deep slow sub bass swells rising and fading gently, felt more than heard, no rhythmic pattern.

Era and subgenre variants

Dark ambient

Same stillness, colder palette. Trade warmth for dissonance and depth.

Dark ambient, cold dissonant drones, cavernous reverb, low ominous rumbles, unsettling distant textures, slow and oppressive, no drums, no melody.

Space ambient

Widescreen and weightless. Everything further away, brighter at the edges.

Space ambient, vast weightless synth pads, glassy shimmering high textures, enormous reverb depth, slow celestial drifting, serene and infinite, no drums.

Ambient with a pulse

The one exception to the no-rhythm rule: a soft, felt pulse, more heartbeat than beat. Keep the drum excludes anyway and let this single line do the work.

Ambient with a soft slow pulse, gentle muffled heartbeat rhythm deep in the mix, evolving warm pads above, hypnotic and minimal, no drum kit, no percussion hits.

When it goes wrong

A beat appeared anyway.

This is Suno reverting to type. Make sure the full exclude list above is in place, and add 'no drums, no percussion' to the prompt itself. Saying it in both fields is not redundant here.

It sounds like new-age spa music.

Usually too much melody. Cut any melodic language, reduce the piano, and lean on words like drone, texture, and static harmony.

It keeps building toward something.

Suno hears ambient intros as the start of an arc. Exclude the arc directly and describe the whole track as one sustained state.
